New Adult Art Classes at the New S.P.Q.R. Art Space!

The newly re-imagined S.P.Q.R. Art Space (formerly conjoined with The Modbo) announces a new round of classes.  Taught by renowned artist and teacher Brett Andrus, and still located in the edgy alley art gallery space of S.P.Q.R., each round of classes lasts for eight sessions, and costs just $170 for all eight classes.  To reserve, or for questions, please email Lauren at modboco@gmail.com.  S.P.Q.R. On Tuesday, February 7th, at 5:15 pm, S.P.Q.R. Art Space offers Art Theory and Professional Practices.  Are you ready to take your art to the next level? This class is designed to teach you the best way to approach art galleries, among other professional aspects of the trade. How do you feel about the business side of your art? Are you ready for some guidance? This class is for you.  In the art theory realm, this class will cover conceptual theory and design theory, as well as opening up the eternal artistic question– why do you do what you do as an artist?

 

On Tuesday, February 7th, at 7:30 pm, S.P.Q.R. Art Space offers Advanced Oil Painting.  This class is only available for those who have taken at least Oil 101.  Given the small class size, there will be a custom curriculum for each student.  Part critique, part studio, this class will absolutely take your painting to the next level.

 

On Monday, February 27th, at 5:15 pm, S.P.Q.R. Art Space offers Oil 101. Have you always been curious about oil painting? This class is definitely for you! Students will be given an introduction to the medium of oil paints, as well as knowledge of how best to utilize it, make it work, etc. Basic color mixing will be covered, as well as still life, life painting, and an  introduction to art history. Prerequisite: No oil painting experience required, but a basic knowledge of drawing is preferred.

 

On Monday, February 27th, at 7:30 pm, S.P.Q.R. Art Space offers Sound Smart at the Museum: Ouroboros.  In this lecture-oriented class, instructor Brett Andrus will present a close look at six contemporary American painters.  You’ll be taken on a walk back through history, examining their artistic genealogy. Totally fascinating and totally worth your while.

Advanced oil painters assemble! It’s time for oil painting boot camp!  This challenging course will allow you to deepen your oil painting technique through painting from life, lectures, some art theory, etc.  It’s time to take things to the next level.  Prerequisite: previous advanced oil painting students, or students who have finished Oil Painting 201.

This class will feature lots of experimentation and in-studio work with models as well as some landscape and plein air painting.  There will be a focus on the medium and technique of watercolor.

Are you currently creating a body of work? Or stuck in a rut? This critique and studio class may be just the thing for you.  Artists are invited to bring in their works in progress during this course.  There will be a few sessions with models, lots of discussion, and the chance to learn from both the instructor and your peers.

In the mixed media class, students will explore art creation with a variety of different mediums.  Mediums will  include watercolor, gouache, printmaking, gold leaf, assemblage, acrylic, and collage.  Students will also learn about artists throughout art history who created with these mediums.  The intention of this class is to allow students a chance to play and experiment while creating work.

Sound Smart At the Museum 2

7:30pm – 9:30pm  With Brett Andrus  $150.

Do you find yourself perplexed in galleries or museums? Do you wonder what makes art “good”? This class is for you!  We’ll focus on art appreciation, art history, and demystifying your relationship with art.  We’ll also introduce you to the major art makers from the late 1800s to a couple weeks ago.   You’ll learn about artists, art movements, and their correlation with previous art movements.  You don’t need to have taken the 101 version of this class, so no excuses there. And furthermore, this will not be a date memorization class, it will actually be fun.  We pinky swear.

Tuesdays, beginning June 2nd

Drawing 301

5:15-7:15 pm  With Brett Andrus. $150.

This class is for graduates of our earlier drawing curricula (with some exceptions with consent of instructor).  Students will learn how to draw from imagination, as well as work on illustrations and what that means.  Some sequential art will be created during this class.  We’ll also work on honing the artists’ ability to create and understand composition.

Oil Painting 201/202

7:30pm – 9:30pm  With Brett Andrus  $150.

This intermediate and advanced intermediate oil class is great for those students who have taken our Oil 201 or Oil 101 classes alike.  Even advanced students will get something out of this course.  We’ll work on individual pacing, media handling, brush strokes, figure painting, and plein air.  Further your knowledge in the wide world of oil painting with this delightful course!

Over nine sessions, students will gain insight into hand/eye coordination, focusing on different drawing media, rendering, expanded principles of perspective and sight reading, and an introduction to color. Drawing 101 or similar knowledge in drawing is highly preferred.

 

Painting 201:

 

7:30 pm – 9:30 pm With Brett Andrus $150, model fee included

 

If you loved your introduction to oil painting and are ready to further your knowledge, we’re ready for you! Students will be introduced to glaze technique and mark-making intention.   Additionally, anatomical focus will be honed, you will make progress on a body of work, and art history from the 1840s-1930s will be covered.  Beginning Oil Painting of some sort is strongly preferred.  Nine sessions included in tuition.

*ModboCo Art Starters, 1st through 5th grades*

11:00 am til 12:15 pm

Instructor Christian Medovich teaches this class, for ages 1st through 5th grade. For six classes in total, this course is only $100 with materials included. This introductory class engages elementary aged artists in a comprehensive and exciting exploration into the visual world. We will begin to uncover the building blocks and techniques necessary for a solid foundation. Our emphasis on line, shape, and form will begin to make the important connections between our mind’s eye and the physical representation in 2D and 3D.

 

*ModboCo Art Rangers, 1st through 5th grades*

12:30 pm til 1:45 pm

Instructor Christian Medovich teaches this class, for ages 1st through 5th grade. $100 with materials included for all six classes. This class builds on what students learned in the Art Starters class. The elementary aged artists will continue building the foundations of technique and creative thinking. Students will get a chance to explore with new media and learn a little bit of Art History. Always a fun environment, the ModboCo strives for growth of our young artist.

*Middle School Drawing*

2:15 pm til 3:30 pm

Christian Medovich will lead this class for middle schoolers. This fun class will teach the basics of drawing in a simple, easy to follow manner.  Fundamentals of drawing and rendering will be taught, as well as perspective, mark-making, and more.  Six classes, with materials included, are just $100.  Your child will be amazed by their own progress!

*Introduction to Oil Painting for High Schoolers*

3:45 pm til 5:45 pm

This class is taught by Christian Medovich for high schoolers interested in dipping their toe into the world of oil painting.  Just $90 with some materials included for all six classes.  Students will learn the fundamentals of oil painting in this fun class, designed to produce results.
